Biography and Artist Statement

Kathleen was born in Kansas City, Kansas, grew up in the suburbs, and was introduced to the visual arts by her two professional artist uncles. Moving to the southern Missouri Ozarks in the 1980's, Kathleen attended Drury University and Missouri State University, graduating with a Masters Degree in Nursing. A long career in pediatric healthcare culminating in ten years as a nurse practitioner ended in 2015 with her retirement. Kathleen's art journey started with acrylic paints and canvas in her home's garage. The "Gessoed Garage" remains her art studio where she continues to pursue her passion for painting, mixed media, portrait drawing, and pastels.

"The saying, 'art is a journey' is an understatement to me. I feel like an explorer every time I sit in front of a canvas or a piece of drawing paper. I'm often not sure where I'm going to be led or what I will discover in the end. The joy comes to me from the light, always the light, and the manner in which the subject matter transforms."
