These little guys are my favorite to watch on the beach. In the panhandle of Florida, they are known as Spotted Sandpipers, or Sanderlings. Weighing in just over an ounce and only 6 to 7 inches long, they are one of the smallest shorebirds in the world. In the late afternoon, and early evening they show up right on the sand and do their little bobbing and hopping, outrunning the tide, and feeding on sand crabs and other tiny molluscs. They never stop moving. Their funny little dance always heralds the end of a beach day for me.
Painted as a birthday gift for a friend with whom I've shared many a late afternoon on a beach.
