Cabin in the Valley

I've spent the last 3 days in a cabin in northwest Arkansas. Mid-April is a lovely time of year in the Ozarks and Easter weekend seems perfect for a few days of relaxation and renewal in the midst of budding trees, spring wild flowers, and baby grasses. Just over an hour's drive from home, close to Beaver Lake, the White River, and Eureka Springs, stands a cabin tucked below rock bluffs and hidden among hickory, oak, dogwood, redbud, and sassafras trees. GPS doesn't reach here. A skinny little road twists down through the hills, with several serious dropoffs on each side, and ends in a rocky and steep, circular"drive" leading to this beautiful little cabin in a valley.

My husband and I brought food to cook, and wine to drink, along with our two Yorkshire terriers. Everything else was provided for. With the exception of two fishermen, we saw noone. We walked, talked, kept a fire in the fireplace, read, painted, spoiled the dogs, and enjoyed each other. The redbud trees are now in full bloom and the dogwood are begining to open. I recently read that red bud blossoms are edible. After a tasting right off the tree (sweet with a little pepper), they garnished our dinner salad. After dark, we marvelled at a visibly orange Mars, a spectacular Venus, and the rest of the glitter we rarely see in the night sky. The four of us slept like babies. We left today, taking a meandering route through the Ozarks to home. Before leaving, we scheduled a visit for the third weekend of October, when leaf color is peaking. We added an extra day. It was too soon to leave this morning.
